MAQUELEVA // Laura Palm
Maqueleva, Celso Chan, is an artist originally from Maputo, Mozambique and has developed his work all over the globe. He currently resides in Cape Town, South Africa and works primarily with ink and watercolor. Art has been a focus of Celso’s for many years, but has only begun in earnest after he completed studies in Finance and Environmental Management in the United States. In 2016, Celso held his first two formal exhibitions in Maputo and Johannesburg. The first, entitled “Meditation” focused on paintings drawn during a time of struggling with his wife’s illness. The second, “Meditation II”, debuted new themes, introducing political issues such as displacement and poverty, reflective of the current political climate. Since these shows, he has focused on introducing mixed media into his work, including newsprints, to explore themes of social and racial injustice.
